AMSTERDAM (AP)--Young Dutch Muslims are being recruited for armed terrorism missions against Western targets, the Dutch secret service said Wednesday.

In a note to parliament, the agency known by its Dutch acronym AIVD repeated its November 2002 warning that recruits are active in the Netherlands.

Madrassas breeding grounds of terrorists: Powell

Pulling no punches, US Secretary of State Colin Powell has denounced madrassas or schools imparting religious education in Pakistan and several other countries as breeding grounds for "fundamentalists and terrorists."

He said the US had held several discussions on the issue with the countries concerned and was in the process of introducing education programmes which would shift the focus of these madrassas to providing useful education.

On the day he was admitted to the hospital last week, for example, Ashcroft was scheduled to speak at a Justice Department news conference. He was set to announce the convictions of three jihadists who trained in Virginia on behalf of the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET), a Pakistani terrorist group. The defendants spun their usual "woe-is-me/Islam is a Religion of Peace/I'm an innocent victim of racial profiling" tales for their tearful relatives and a sympathetic media. But the Justice Department didn't buy their stories. And neither did U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema, a Clinton appointee, who blasted the terror cell members' cover stories for traveling abroad to wage holy war as "incredible" and "simply implausible."

Every single time Ashcroft has brought charges against jihadists in America, he has been mocked and vilified. Every single time he has tightened the screws on Islamic terror recruitment and financing, he has been lambasted as a racist. Every single time they have been arrested, the defendants have proclaimed their absolute innocence. And each time Ashcroft has won convictions against them -- neutralizing terror cells in Lackawanna, N.Y., Portland, Detroit, and now northern Virginia -- he has been met with more condemnation and derision.

JAKARTA — Indonesia's jailed Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who is linked to the Jemaah Islamiyah militant Islamic group, on Thursday vowed to resume teaching jihad, or holy war, against the enemies of Islam after his release from prison next month.

AL QAEDA FEAR RUNS THROUGH EUROPE

JERUSALEM - Even if it turns out that Basque separatists are responsible for the blood on the tracks in Madrid, European security officials are very concerned about the possibility - one might say inevitability - of a devastating al Qaeda strike in the heart of Europe.

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz was in Paris on Monday, where he met with the French secretary of defense.

"France is really worried about Muslim terrorist threats directed against European targets," Mofaz told The Post before the Madrid bombings.

French concern was strong enough that they struck an agreement with Mofaz to tighten the intelligence cooperation and coordination between Israel and France to track al Qaeda cells.

Alleged Bin Laden Message Calls for Jihad Council

DUBAI (Reuters) - Hitherto unreported parts of a message said to come from Osama bin Laden urge Islamic clerics and leaders to form a council to rally and arm Muslims for holy war against the West, an Islamic Web site reported on Saturday.
Al Jazeera television had in January aired parts of an audio tape that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency said was "likely" from bin Laden, leader of al Qaeda network. The Dirasat Web site carried the full text.
