PHILIPPINES (Typhoon Haiyan)

• •Current status: up to 10,000 people may have been killed (1,700 bodies recovered), at least 600,000 displaced, total of nearly 10 million affected … with roads blocked and communication links destroyed, remote areas still unreachable … communication still down … restoring electricity may take two months.
  •The US Navy is deploying the GEORGE WASHINGTON Carrier Strike Group … cutting short visit to Hong Kong … GEORGE WASHINGTON act as logistic hub and helicopter base (rmks: a role proven in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake) … along with cruisers ANTIETAM and COWPENS and destroyers MUSTIN and LASSEN … supply ship CHARLES DREW already on the way … all could be on station within 48 to 72 hours.
  •The British Royal Navy is sending destroyer DARING (currently deployed near Singapore) to provide humanitarian assistance and helicopter flights with its on board Lynx … also carries equipment to make drinking water from seawater … may arrive around 16 Nov.
