In den zentralasiatischen Turkstaaten hat seit dem Zerfall der Sovietunion nicht nur eine deutlich zu beobachtende "Rückbesinnung" zum Islam stattgefunden, sondern ist, angeheizt durch die Konflikte im Nahen Osten und Afghanistan, auch eine zunehmende Hinwendung zu extremistischen Elementen mit überregionalem Fokus ("Al-Kaida") zu beobachten.
