The requirement

The Barracuda attack submarine programme is aimed at the replacement of the six modernised "Rubis" class ("Améthyste") nuclear attack submarines when they reach the end of their service life between 2012 and 2023. The plan is to build six submarines under this programme.

The Barracuda submarine will, like its predecessors, have an anti-submarine and anti-surface vessel role. Their principal tasks will be screening for the Strategic Oceanic Force, escort for the air/naval task force, and deep-sea patrol and superiority.

The essential characteristics of these roles require the Barracuda submarines to be nuclear powered, as are their predecessors. (...)
