Why hunger looms in aid-rich Afghanistan

More than 2.5 million people face hunger in drought-stricken areas of Afghanistan despite billions of dollars of aid that have poured into the country in recent years, aid agencies say. Many villagers have only limited supplies of food left as winter looms, as the BBC's Mike Thomson reports from the central province of Bamiyan.

Aid groups say 14 of the country's 34 provinces, most of them in the north, have been hit by the drought, believed to be one of the worst this decade.

Some 90% of households in affected areas are living in debt and many schools have closed because children have been sent to find work.

Angriff auf die große afghanische Ratsversammlung: Zwei Raketen schlugen in der Nähe vom Tagungsort in der Hauptstadt Kabul ein. Ein Mann wurde dabei verletzt. Die radikalislamische Taliban hatten zuvor mit Anschlägen auf die Loya Jirga gedroht.

Afghan Conclave Hardens Karzai's Line on U.S.

The Afghan parliament, dominated by opponents of Mr. Karzai, has declared this week's Loya Jirga unconstitutional, and said that any agreement with the U.S. would require parliamentary approval regardless of the conference's decisions.

While reiterating Mr. Karzai's demands, the list of conditions adopted by the Loya Jirga also included a requirement that American citizens have no immunity for committing crimes and "should be tried inside Afghanistan in accordance with the country's laws."

The Loya Jirga also stipulated that the U.S. presence after 2014 should be limited to 10 years, that U.S. bases should be outside urban areas and that these facilities shouldn't be used against neighboring countries such as Iran or Pakistan.
