The Arab popular protests were and are not based on political or religious ideology, Khalid Al Harroub, director of the Information Programme of the Cambridge University research centre told the website of Al Arabiya. He added that in the case of Egypt, several Muslim groups are trying to redirect the revolution.
The Arab uprisings, Al Harroub explains, have forced the United States and the West in general to change course in their support of dictatorial Arab regimes. The West justified this support by pointing at its national interests, despite the fact that the support was damaging for entire populations.
The presence of political Islam in the Arab protests has two conflicting aspects according to Al Harroub. The first aspect will become a negative one if the Muslim groups keep their old and rigid mentality, while the second is positive if these groups submit to the political law of moderation, as is happening in Turkey.
