President Ahmadinejad added that Iraq used chemical weapons provided by Western countries to massacre the innocent and defenseless people of Sardasht “which is an indication of international terrorism led by the West.”

On 28th June 1987, Sardasht, near the border with Iraq, was attacked by four bombs containing 250 kilograms (550 lb) of mustard gas. The bombs were dropped in the densely populated town center.

Sardasht is the first town in the world to be gassed. More than 100 people were killed in the attacks.

The real toll, however, is much higher as out of a population of 20,000, some 5,000 people are still suffering severe illnesses including severe respiratory problems and skin disorders ever since.
