Lebanon Druze leader meets Iran envoy

The head of Lebanon's Progressive Socialist Party has met with the Iranian ambassador to Beirut to discuss the prospect of enhancing ties between the two countries.

Walid Jumblatt held talks with Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Rokn-Abadi, a Press TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.

Following the meeting, the Druze leader said the move aimed to open a new page in Lebanon's relations with the Islamic Republic.

Meanwhile, reports said Jumblatt's visit was arranged to pave the way for future trips to Iran.

Relations between the two sides entered a new phase after Lebanese President Michel Sleiman officially asked Iran to equip and modernize the Lebanese Army.

Since 2009, Jumblatt has often made public apologies and reconciliations, paving the way for his return to Damascus, after expressing regret for his accusation of Syrian involvement in the 2005 assassination of Hariri.

His visit to the Iranian Embassy on Monday was an attempt to mend fences with Iran too. In previous remarks, Jumblatt said he would not visit Tehran unless he was granted permission from Saudi Arabia King Abdullah.
