BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri highlighted on Wednesday Turkey’s support for developing Lebanese-Turkish bilateral ties, particularly economic relations, as a first step toward the establishment of a strategic higher council between both countries.
“Turkish officials stressed that Turkey will always stand by Lebanon’s side and accord great importance to security, stability and peace in Lebanon given their pivotal implications on boosting cooperation between both countries,” Berri told the Higher Council of Lebanese-Turkish businessmen.
Speaking in Istanbul, Berri called for the establishment of a regional Islamic market embracing Turkey, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Indonesia in order to boost labor, production and exports in the Islamic world.
“I am here to propose an idea that I did not yet discuss with regional economic experts and I urge you to stop wasting time in seeking to join Western markets, a step which I do not oppose, but rather call for immediately establishing a large regional Islamic market,” Berri said.
