Warmer U.S.-Russia Relations May Yield Little in Action Toward Iran

MOSCOW — The Kremlin has long responded to proposals for tougher sanctions against Iran with arms folded and a scowl. Last week, that attitude began softening, bringing the Obama administration closer to a diplomatic coup in its efforts to contain the Iranian nuclear program.

But the relatively conciliatory statements by Russia’s president, Dmitri A. Medvedev, present an opening to the administration that could turn out to yield little. Russia, a neighbor of Iran, is far more intertwined with it geopolitically than any other world power, and has more concerns about upsetting relations.

Russia is also reluctant to mass the might of the United Nations Security Council against a single country, especially at Washington’s behest. That in part explains why Russia has historically sought to dilute sanctions, as it did in previous rounds against Iran.

Die Allianz gegen das "vermeintliche Reich des Bösen" wird also wohl nicht vorbehaltlos vom ehemaligen "Reich des Bösen" mitgetragen werden, amerikanisches "Reset" gegenüber Russland hin oder her....

...und nun eine Stimme, die in eine ganz andere Richtung geht und der Shahab sicherlich wird zustimmen können...

The U.S.-Iranian Triangle

NEW YORK — France and Germany fought three wars in 70 years before the bright idea dawned of enfolding their problem into something larger: the European Union. The United States and Iran have not gone to war but have a relationship of psychotic mistrust. The answer can only be the same: Broaden the context.

The revelation that Iran has built a second uranium enrichment plant in secrecy did not change the nuclear equation if that’s measured by the country’s ability to produce a bomb. No uranium has entered the facility. Iran’s eventual capacity to produce weapons-grade fissile material, let alone deliver it, is unaffected.

What has changed is the psychology of the Iranian nuclear program. Mistrust, already deep, is now fathomless.

Ehrlich gesagt hat diese Sichtweise viel für sich bzw. dürfte den iranischen Mindset sehr treffend charakterisieren, weil auch für die Oppositionellen wie Moussawi das Nuklearprogramm an sich stets über jeden internationalen Zweifel erhaben war.
Dass natürlich dies in anderen Weltregionen trotzdem erhebliche Bauchschmerzen auslöst, ist eine andere Sache.
