Pakistani troops fire on intruding U.S. choppers

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani troops fired on two U.S. helicopters that intruded into Pakistani airspace on Sunday night, forcing them to turn back to Afghanistan, a senior Pakistani security official said on Monday.

It was the second such incident in a week, and reflects frayed relations with the United States over Pakistan's failure to act more forcibly against Islamist fighters in the tribal lands bordering Afghanistan.
The number of missile attacks by U.S. drone aircraft in the remote tribal areas has multiplied in recent weeks.
The helicopters violated the border in the area of Lowara Mandi, 40 km (25 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region.

Der Anschlag in Islamabad hat größere innenpolitische Auswirkung. Schließlich wurde hier von Terroristen nicht irgendwo in der seit Jahrzehnten unkontrollierten Nordwestgrenzprovinz zugeschlagen, sondern in der pakistanischen Hauptstadt. Ähnlich wie die Vorfälle mit der Roten Moschee vor über einem Jahr erregt solch eine Gewalteruption größere politische Aufmerksamkeit in ganz Pakistan:

Alles in allem stellt sich die Lage derzeit für mich in Pakistan bei allen Unkenrufen als "relativ" stabil dar, obschon man natürlich einräumen muss, dass die Lage höchst konfliktgeladen ist und weiterhin ein hohes Potenzial für Gewalt und Blutvergießen besteht. Die Offensive der Regierung Bajaur in den Stammesregionen provoziert natürlich auf Seiten der zahllosen Militantengruppen Gegenreaktionen. Dies wird insbesondere in der Nordwestgrenzprovinz zu weiterer Gewalt führen und zu mehr Instabilität. Auch werden weitere Anschläge in den "ruhigeren" Provinzen Punjab und Sindh sicherlich folgen. Nichtsdestotrotz, ich sehe mittelfristig keine Talibanregierung in Pakistan oder gar das völlige Auseinanderfallen Pakistans. Letzteres wird allein schon das die nationale Institution an sich, durch die Armee verhindert werden.
