THE US economy is now in recession, according to JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon.

Mr Dimon, head of the third-largest US bank, made the comments at a dinner sponsored by the Economic Club of Washington.

He said finance companies were about "50% done" with working through problems in the markets, citing examples such as monoline insurers raising capital and banks bringing assets owned by structured investment vehicles onto their balance sheets.

The collapse of the US subprime mortgage market has caused losses and write-downs of $US188 billion ($A195 billion) up to March 7, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. And according to a survey of chief financial officers released on Wednesday, the US economy is in a prolonged tightening that will not end until next year.
