U.S. Navy Decoms Trenton, Transfers to Indian Navy

The amphibious transport dock ship USS Trenton (LPD 14), was decommissioned Jan. 17 in a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk. Immediately following the decommissioning, Trenton was recommissioned and transferred to the Indian Navy, bearing the name INS Jalashwa.

INS Jalashwa joins eastern command fleet

INS Jalashwa, the latest induction into the Indian Navy, arrived at Visakhapatnam on PM 12 Sep 07 after being commissioned at Norfolk, USA on 22 Jun 07. ‘Jalashwa’, (a Sanskrit name of the Hippopotamus), with its Motto ‘The Fearless Pioneers’, is an amphibious assault ship that can embark, transport and land various elements of an amphibious force to support operations ashore. This is the 1st ship to be transferred from the US besides being the 1st Landing Platform Dock (LPD) to be acquired by the Navy.

Ein merkwürdiges zeitliches Zusammentreffen sei noch erwähnt: am 1. September - vor wenigen Wochen - hat das erste chinesische Docklandungsschiff vom Typ 071 C seine ersten Werfterprobungsfahrten (sea trials) absolviert.
Beide Klassen scheinen mir - nach all dem was aus China so an Gerüchten und Vermutungen rüber kommt - in der Größe in etwa vergleichbar, nur dass die gute (ver)alte(te) Trenton nach 40 Jahren Truppendienst schon sehr gebraucht ist, und vom design - na ja, man braucht nur den Hangar anzusehen ...
