The disbandment marks the end of a unique military experiment that saw thousands of foreign fighters join Ukraine’s defense against Russia.
The four international legion units have been reorganized into other military structures. The 1st and 3rd International Legions merged into the 475th Assault Regiment, while the 4th International Legion’s infrastructure became the 157th International Training Center. The 2nd International Legion was dispersed, with personnel also believed absorbed into the 475th Assault Regiment.
The reorganization has proven contentious among some unit members. Andriy Spivka, deputy commander of the 2nd International Legion, criticized how the disbandment was handled, saying established teams and crews were broken up arbitrarily.
“The teams, crews, they are broken up and people are simply placed absolutely randomly in vacant positions in the assault regiment,” Spivka said.
According to Spivka, the 2nd Legion’s commander opposed the dissolution and sought legal review from the State Bureau of Investigation. Shortly after filing his appeal with the SBI and Specialized Prosecutor’s Office, the commander was removed from his position and reassigned to duties in a distant part of the country.
The disbandment affects only the Ground Forces structure. The International Legion of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine operates separately and remains fully operational.
