The IMF, which held regular consultations in Iran from May 28 to June 9, said strong growth in non-oil sectors and good performance in agriculture helped the country recover to 3.5 percent growth in 2009-10 despite a fall in oil prices.

Iran has achieved "early success in the implementation of their ambitious subsidy reform program" with increases in prices of energy, public transport, wheat, and bread having removed almost $60 billion of subsidies, the IMF said.

"At the same time, the redistribution of the revenues arising from the price increases to households as cash transfers has been effective in reducing inequalities, improving living standards, and supporting domestic demand in the economy," the statement said.

Rücktritt des Vize-Aussenministers – Parlament lehnt Kandidat für Sportministerium ab

In Iran ist der stellvertretende Aussenminister Maleksadeh zurückgetreten. Maleksadeh geriet offenbar zwischen die Fronten im anhaltenden Machtkampf zwischen Präsident Ahmadinejad, dem Parlament und dem obersten Klerus.

Abgeordnete aus dem ultrakonservativen Lager hatten wegen Korruptionsvorwürfen ein Amtsenthebungsverfahren gegen ihn angestrengt. Maleksadeh wies die Anschuldigungen zurück. Sein Rücktrittsgesuch sei akzeptiert worden, berichtete die halbamtliche Nachrichtenagentur Fars.

Wegen ihm sollte dem Aussenminister Ali Akbar Salehi nicht noch mehr Leid zuteilwerden, begründete Maleksadeh seinen Rücktritt in einem an den Aussenamtschef adressierten Schreiben. Er sei Opfer hinterhältiger Manipulation geworden und ihm seien zahlreiche Ungerechtigkeiten widerfahren, sagte Maleksadeh.

Parlament lehnt Kandidaten ab

Das iranische Parlament lehnte zudem den von Ahmadinejad als ersten Sportminister des Landes vorgeschlagenen Kandidaten Hamid Sajadi ab..

Im Parlament wiesen mehr als 55 Prozent der Abgeordneten den Vorschlag zurück, den 43-Jährigen früheren Asienmeister im Langlauf und Vertreter der iranischen Sportorganisation zum Sportminister zu machen.

Auch dieser Schritt war ein weiteres Signal der Opposition gegen die Politik des Präsidenten. Ahmadinejad hatte das Parlament ausdrücklich aufgefordert, den Minister und das neue Ministerium im nationalen Interesse zu bestätigen.

Iran's Secretary of the Supreme Council for Iranians Abroad Mohammad Sharif Malekzadeh has been arrested on corruption charges.

Iran's Fars News Agency reported the arrest on Thursday, citing an informed source. Earlier in the month, Malekzadeh was appointed by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi as the ministry's deputy for administrative and financial affairs. Malekzadeh, however, had to resign after Iranian lawmakers called for Salehi's impeachment over his controversial nominee for the post.

Prison guards in Iran are giving condoms to criminals and encouraging them to systematically rape young opposition activists locked up with them, according to accounts from inside the country's jail system. A series of dramatic letters written by prisoners and families of imprisoned activists allege that authorities are intentionally facilitating mass rape and using it as a form of punishment. [...]

(sda/afp) Kontosperren und Einreiseverbote wurden unter anderem gegen den Generalbefehlshaber des Korps der iranischen Revolutionsgarden, Mohammed Ali Jafari, verhängt, wie die EU am Freitag in ihrem Amtsblatt mitteilte. Jafari sowie zwei weitere Kommandanten der sogenannten Pasdaran hätten sich «an der Bereitstellung von Ausrüstungen und Unterstützung für das syrische Regime für das gewaltsame Vorgehen gegen Demonstranten in Syrien» beteiligt, heisst es zur Begründung.

Irans Opposition beklagt systematische Vergewaltigungen

Iranische Oppositionelle erheben schwere Vorwürfe gegen das Regime in Teheran: Laut einem Bericht des "Guardian" sollen die Behörden in Gefängnissen gezielte Vergewaltigungen dulden - als Strafe für politische Gefangene. Wärter würden dafür sogar Kondome verteilen.

Intrigen, Spionage, Aberglaube

Irans Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad steht massiv unter Druck. Die Justiz verhaftet mehrere seiner Anhänger, Parlamentarier planen ein Amtsenthebungsverfahren, der Machtkampf mit Ajatollah Chamenei ist voll entbrannt. Nun erregt auch noch ein grotesker Erweckungsfilm die Gemüter.

Mich wundert immernoch, dass er sich schon so lange hält, obwohl er keinen Rückhalt bei den Mullahs mehr hat.
Chamenei spielt mit ohm, wie mit einer Handpuppe, aber abgesägt hat er ihn halt noch nicht.
Vieleicht sieht er ihn ja als das kleinere Übel. Und man braucht ja wen auf den man die Schuld schieben kann, wenn mal wieder die Unzulänglichkeiten des Systems zutage treten.

Spannend ein Zeuge zu sein, wenn sich die Beurteilung der Lage durch bestimmte User um exakt 180 Grad dreht. Ahmadinejad ist wohl also doch nicht so mächtig, wie ursprünglich angenommen. Und der Klerus also doch einflussreicher als ursprünglich gedacht?!

Trade Sanctioning a Nation of Traders

The word bazaar understood around the world, irrespective of language, describes so much more than a place to come and buy something. It brings thoughts of haggling, bargain finding, tough negotiation, and avoiding being conned. Persians are known for their famous bazaars (where this word originates). The one in Tehran is the largest in the world stretching out for miles.

If there was a prize given out for a country that hast the most sanctions placed on it, Iran would get it hands down. Almost everything is somehow sanctioned, barred, or classified as a dual use item and banned to be sold to Iran. At times a company or entity is sanctioned multiple times. Where there is not currently a sanction, countries use the bully and shame method to push companies from doing business with Iran. Lately, the US is going after foreign shipping firms that ship to Iran's ports. There has been fear that many essential food items like wheat, corn, and sugar could be effected. Planes and plane parts are banned to Iran if it contains an American firms involvement, which translates to almost all plane manufactures (including Russian since they recently use American engine parts). Even items like medical MRI and CT scanners are banned under the "dual civilian military use" definition.

If these multi-layer sanctions were to be effective than Iran would have to look very different than it does today. Unlike countries like, Cuba, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Syria, Iraq, and Sudan, Iran today has a very active economy that trades with many countries. As pressure from Europe and America has increased, business from Iran has migrated to China, Turkey, and Latin American countries. Iran's trade with China as of late has past $30 billion and is set to mark $50 in a few years. Iran's trade with Turkey is also on the rise anticipated to pass $10 billion this year. Walk into any shop in Iran and you will be amazed by the selection of products and items from around the world, even in your local grocery the times the size of a walk in closet. In one tally recently, I found soft drinks from as far as South Korea, China, and Argentina. European and American chocolate bars are brought from Dubai and other Arabic countries (as the Arabic text states). Even ready to make meals from Europe are sold but with Turkish text. Actually, I found not one product that I needed NOT offered in Iran, whether it was American, European or Asian.

Iran: Beraterin Ahmadinedschads festgenommen

In seinem Machtkampf mit der Spitze des Klerus hat der iranische Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad einen neuen Rückschlag hinnehmen müssen. Wie staatliche Medien heute berichteten, wurde ein weiteres Mitglied seines Beraterstabs festgenommen. Es handle sich um die bisherige Direktorin des Nationalen Museums, Asadeh Ardakani.

Generalstaatsanwalt Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Edzehi hatte bereits am Montag weitere Festnahmen von Mitgliedern der „Gruppe der Abweichler“ angekündigt. Darunter seien Beamte der Kulturerbeorganisation, der auch das Nationale Museum zugeordnet ist. Ahmadinedschad hatte vergangene Woche bekräftigt, er und seine Regierung würden sich von der „Schmutzkampagne“ seiner Kritiker nicht einschüchtern lassen.
