Türkiye’s GÖKTUĞ air-to-air missile program, launched in 2013 by TÜBİTAK SAGE, has reached its final testing and production phase, marking a milestone in the country’s defense self-sufficiency drive.

With both the Bozdoğan and Gökdoğan missiles now entering serial production, the system positions Türkiye among the few nations capable of independently developing advanced air combat munitions.

Project Overview
The GÖKTUĞ project was designed to replace imported U.S. systems such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM, reducing Türkiye’s reliance on foreign suppliers and ITAR-restricted components.

Following a 2023 production contract, 25 Bozdoğan and 25 Gökdoğan missiles, along with 14 launchers, are slated for delivery by 2025.

Initially developed for F-16 fighter jets, the missiles are being adapted for UCAVs (AKINCI), manned aircraft (KAAN, HÜRJET), and air defense platforms (GÜRZ, GÖKDEMİR, GÖKSUR).

TÜBİTAK SAGE confirmed that both missiles are ready for acceptance tests, following a series of precision trials throughout 2025.

ROKETSAN Completes Work on GÖKBORA’s Solid Fuel Ramjet TurDef
ROKETSAN CEO Murat İkinci stated that the work on GÖKBORA BVRAAM’s solid fuel ramjet was completed during his presentation at Ankara University Teknokent.

Murat İkinci gave the update regarding the completion of work on the solid fuel ramjet engine for GÖKBORA beyond visual range air-to-air missile at the Kamp'üss event held in Ankara University Teknokent.

GÖKBORA, unveiled during IDEF2025, is ROKETSAN’s first air-to-air missile with an emphasis on stealth aircraft. With a length of 3.75 m and folding fins, GÖKBORA is highly optimised for carriage inside the weapon bays of aircraft like KAAN and KIZILELMA. However, non-stealthy aircraft like the F-16 will still be able to use the missile.

On the performance side, the missile can reach a range of 185+ km and is set to use Turkiye’s first AESA RF seeker, AGRAS 3101/AA, being developed by ASELSAN.

ROKETSAN CEO Murat İkinci provided updates on the development of the GÖKBORA ramjet-powered BVRAAM to be integrated on fighter jets and unmanned platforms.

Murat İkinci, in his interview with Habertürk TV, provided an overview of the capabilities, ongoing works, and the timeline for readiness for the ramjet-powered GÖKBORA beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM).

İkinci stated that GÖKBORA is being developed as a next-generation missile featuring advanced data link capability, propulsion architecture with solid fuel ramjet, sensors, and warhead technologies. The missile is intended for integration across a wide range of platforms, including the Eurofighter Typhoon, KAAN fifth-generation fighter, KIZILELMA unmanned combat aircraft, AKINCI, and potentially ANKA-III.

GÖKDOĞAN Air-to-Air Missile Nears a Range of 100 km TurDef
Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır stated that GÖKDOĞAN BVRAAM has neared a range of 100 km during an interview with Kanal 7.

GÖKDOĞAN’s range has been extended compared to the initial specifications, according to the Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır.

When asked about the current maximum range for air-to-air missiles in an interview with Kanal 7, Kacır stated that a range of 100 km was achieved. It is more than likely that this refers to GÖKDOĞAN as the only Turkish BVRAAM that is available, while the longer ranged and ramjet powered GÖKHAN and GÖKBORA BVRAAMs are to come later.

This brings GÖKDOĞAN to the range of AIM-120C variants, which have ranges of more than 90 km.

TÜBİTAK SAGE: “Ground testing activities continue at pace while work has commenced for the new block GÖKHAN missile aimed at range and capability enhancement.”

TÜBİTAK’s 2025 activity report has been published, including detailed information on the ongoing projects at TÜBİTAK SAGE. According to the report, a contract amendment has been signed for the range and capability enhancement of the GÖKHAN Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) with a National Ramjet Engine, which was first unveiled at IDEF 2025. The report states:

“While ground testing activities continue at high speed, work has simultaneously commenced for the new block GÖKHAN missile, for which a contract was signed regarding range and capability enhancement. Following the development phase, once GÖKHAN enters production, it will be among the longest-range air-to-air missiles within the NATO inventory.”

Turkish MoD has provided additional information regarding ROKETSAN’s GÖKBORA ramjet-powered BVRAAM, giving March 2031 as the qualification date for F-16s.

Turkish MoD’s 2025 activity report includes new information regarding the introduction of ROKETSAN’s GÖKBORA solid fuel ramjet-powered BVRAAM on F-16 fighters.

The MoD statement on the new BVRAAM from ROKETSAN gives the qualification date for F-16 fighters as March 2031, roughly five years from now.

GÖKBORA is a solid fuel ramjet-powered BVRAAM unveiled by ROKETSAN during IDEF2025 defence exhibition as an internal bay-friendly missile for stealth aircraft with a range of 185+ km.
