First New Generation Frigate For Chinese Navy Launched In Shanghai

The lead ship of a new type of frigate for the Chinese Navy (PLAN), informally designated Type 054B, has been launched at Hudong-Zhonghua, Shanghai, overnight on Saturday, the 26th of August. [...]

Type 054B, despite the designation, is a completely new type of frigate, thought to displace around 6,000 tons at full load, and as such about 50% larger than the preceding Type 054A, as reported previously on Naval News.

As expected Type 054B will carry a 32 cell-vertical launch missile system (VLS) on the bow. The type of VLS however remains unclear, with one candidate being the same system fitted to Type 054A, capable of launching the HQ-16 medium range SAM and Yu-8 anti-submarine-missiles. Also possible remains the “Universal VLS” used on Type 055 and Type 052D, capable of launching SAM, Anti-ship missiles (AShM), and likely further types in the future. Ahead of the bridge a H/PJ-11 30 mm close in-weapon system (CIWS) is mounted. On the hangar a HQ-10 launcher for 24 SAM is fitted for short range air defence, similar to the larger Type 055 and 052D-destroyers, in addition to decoy launchers port and starboard.

Chinese Navy Next Generation Frigate Starts Builder Trials

Speedy progress for program to field a new mid-sized combatant for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

The first Type 054B-frigate built by Hudong in Shanghai has started builder trials. This key step saw confirmation through imagery shared on Chinese social media. The Chinese Navy next generation frigate got caught by enthusiasts sailing up the Huangpu River, apparently returning from a trial back to Hudong’s construction facilities further upstream on the river. The ship still features the red anti-rust coating prominently on its deck. The unfinished state suggests further painting and other work is yet to follow, before the frigate will be handed over to PLAN for service trials and commissioning. For weaponry the VLS is the H/AKJ-16-design with 32 cells similar to 054A featuring HQ-16-type medium range surface to air- and Yu-8 ASW-missiles. Furthermore the Type 054B design features slant carriers supporting two quadruple box launchers for anti-ship missiles amidships. An exact type remains unconfirmed and YJ-83 or YJ-12 AShM are both plausible candidates. Other already confirmed armament includes the 100mm main gun, a gun CIWS, likely the Type 1130, a HQ-10 missile CIWS, and lightweight torpedo-launchers.

Chinas Louhe-Fregatten – Testplattformen oder neue Standard-Klasse

Seit ihrer Indienststellung in 2025 werden „Luohe“ (545, Nordflotte) und „Quinzhou“ (555, Südflotte) als neueste chinesische Überwassereinheiten der Jinagkai III-Klasse (Type 054B) zugeordnet. Sie könnten zwei Testplattformen für neue Technologien sein – wie das bei der chinesischen Marine mehrfach beobachtet wurde – oder sie sind der auf Anhieb gelungene Beginn einer Serienproduktion zur Ablösung der Fregatten der Klassen Jiangkai I und II (Type 054A).

Dieser seit mehr als 25 Jahren gebaute Fregattentyp gilt mit über 40 Einheiten als die Standard-FK-Plattform der chinesischen Marine für Präsenz-Einsätze in Westpazifik und Südchinesischem Meer sowie für Show-of-Force-Operationen in den Gewässern rund um Taiwan. Type 054B ist mit 148 Metern Länge und 6.000 Tonnen Verdrängung etwas größer, ist aber vor allem auf den beiden Integralmasten mit leistungsgesteigerten Sensoren der neuesten Generation bestückt und weist zudem auch ein verringertes Rückstrahlprofil auf. Bei unverändertem 32-Zellen-Silo für den FK-Vertikalstart bedeuten die 100mm-Kanone und die mit FK bestückten Nahbereichs-Abwehrsysteme auch eine waffentechnische Aufwertung.

Das rotierende Luftraum-Überwachungsradar, markant auf dem Hauptmast aufgesetzt, darf als Hinweis für eine verbesserte Flugabwehr gewertet werden. Anfang Februar wurde per Satellit zwar der Baubeginn eines weiteren Rumpfes der Type 054B registriert, aber auch das gibt noch keine klare Antwort auf die Frage einer Serienfertigung.
