Sie sieht aus wie ein Mix aus Ameisenbär und Agusta A129 auf Steroiden, und sie ist Europas erster neu entwickelter Kampfhubschrauber seit dem Eurocopter Tiger. Obwohl sie schon am 12. August 2022 zum Erstflug abhob und inzwischen zwei Prototypen flügge sind, agierte die AW249 Fenice (Phönix), entworfen und gebaut von Leonardo aus Italien, lange im Verborgenen. Bildmaterial von der Flugerprobung gab es seitens Leonardo nicht, und auch mit technischen Details hielten sich die Italiener vornehm zurück.
