Wie BrigGen Mohammad Ali Jafari am 7. Februar bei einer Pressekonferenz erklärte, habe die „Massenproduktion eines intelligenten, ballistischen Flugkörpers zur Bekämpfung von Seezielen“ begonnen. Die von Land abgefeuerte „Khalij Fars“ fliege ihr Ziel mit mehr als dreifacher Schallgeschwindigkeit an, könne von Radar nicht entdeckt werden und sei „immun gegen jegliche Abfangversuche“. Sie habe eine Reichweite von 300 km und trage eine 650-kg Gefechtsladung. Experten erkennen auf veröffentlichten offiziellen Fotos eine leicht modifizierte Kurzstreckenrakete vom Typ Fateh-110 (einstufig, Feststofftriebwerk). Dieser Flugkörper folgt einer ballistischen Flugbahn, verlässt dabei aufgrund seiner relativ kurzen Reichweite aber nicht die Atmosphäre.

Ein ebenfalls veröffentlichtes offizielles Video (einige Tage auch auf der Internet-Plattform YouTube zu sehen, inzwischen aber dort wieder entfernt) zeigte die neue Rakete bei einem erfolgreichen Testschuss gegen ein vor der Küste verankertes Schiff. Das Video - so es denn authentisch und nicht (wie bei früheren derartigen Publikationen durchaus üblich) mit spezieller Foto-Software „nachbearbeitet“ war - ließ für den Zielendanflug auf eine optische Steuerung (Videolink) schließen; ob diese auch durch Radar oder Infrarot unterstützt wird, ist unklar. Beim Testschuss wurde das Ziel präzise getroffen und spektakulär vernichtet. Zur Zielentfernung wurden allerdings keine Angaben gemacht, und die Wirksamkeit gegen ein bewegliches Ziel in einer sich ständig ändernden taktischen Lage dürfte sich deutlich von der gegen ein zuvor genauestens vermessenes stationäres Ziel unterscheiden. General Jafaris Behauptungen zur Unmöglichkeit einer Ortung und Bekämpfung der anfliegenden Rakete sind als bloße Propaganda zu werten, sollen wohl vornehmlich auch nur die eigene Bevölkerung begeistern. Jedes zur Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) befähigte Kriegsschiff wird sicher auch die „Khalij Fars“ erfassen, verfolgen und effektiv abfangen können.

Bezeichnenderweise erfolgte die Präsentation der „Khalij Fars“ nur einen Tag nachdem General Jafari für den Fall einer Bedrohung des Iran (mal wieder) mit der Sperrung der Straße von Hormuz gedroht hatte. In dieser Meerenge sich auf festen Kursen über de facto vorprogrammierbare Positionen relativ langsam bewegende, große Supertanker wären sicher geeignetere Ziele als schnelle, BMD-fähige Kampfschiffe. Sicher auch nicht rein zufällig erfolgt die Verkündung der Serienreife („begonnene Massenfertigung“) eines ballistischen Seeziel-FK zeitnah zu Diskussionen über ein ähnliches chinesisches Programm (DF-21), das in den USA offenbar erhebliche Kopfschmerzen bereitet. Hier wird man zumindest psychologisch sehr gern aufsatteln wollen..
