Die Insel im südlichen Teil des indischen Ozeans liegt strategisch zentral zwischen Südafrika, Indien und Australien. Mit der Piratengefahr im nordwesten wird die Insel interessanter - auch als Stützpunkt für die Piratenabwehr. Etwa 2/3 der Bevölkerung hat indische Wurzeln, weshalb wir die Insel auf unserer Hauptseite zum Hindu-Kulturkreis geordnet haben. Auch die formale Zusammenarbeit mit Indien nimmt zu. So hat Indien schon bisher beim Aufbau der Küstenwache enorme Aufbauhilfe geleistet. Diese Unterstützung besteht auch weiterhin:
